Gary: Hello, Elizabeth! Today I’ll be talking about how to apologize and how to respond to an apology.

 Today’s Business Dialog begins with Nathan apologizing, using the expression “I’m sorry.”

 Notice that he explains the reason why he is late.

Nathan: Helen, I’m really sorry that I’m so late.

 My train broke down in Oakland.

Helen: That’s OK. It’s not a problem.

Gary: When you apologize, it is always important to give a reason.

 Nathan also apologizes for not calling Helen and he explains why he didn’t call.

 This time he uses the expression “I apologize...”

Nathan: Umm…. I apologize for not calling.

 But my cell phone didn’t work in the tunnel.

Helen: Nathan, it’s perfectly all right.

 You’re hardly ever late.

Gary: In both of these cases, Helen accepts Nathan’s apology and tries to make him feel better.

 She uses the expressions “That’s OK,” and “It’s perfectly all right” to reassure Nathan.

Blake: Uh huh.

Gary: This is not the most polite way to respond to this situation.

 Mr. Blake shows that he is not happy with the situation.

 But later Mr. Blake does accept the apology, saying “It’s no problem.”

Gomez: In the meantime, I’m quite familiar with International Robotics and your products...

 ...and so I’d like to work with you, if that would be all right.

Blake: Okay, sure. And I understand about Mr. Chapman’s absence.

 It’s no problem.

Gary: I hope today’s tips were helpful!

Eliz: Thanks, Gary!
